Video DRM licensing and compatibility

Review media encryption, key responsibility, license issuance and device compatibility when evaluating DRM for rights-controlled video.

Overview

DRM involves more than encrypting files. Rights requirements, devices, the player and authorization systems need to form a complete workflow before implementation and maintenance costs can be assessed.

This is a DRM integration guide. It does not claim that WAFGO holds a particular vendor license, content-owner certification or device security rating. Project parties must confirm licensing and compatibility.

01

Assign responsibility across the playback chain

Separate media preparation, keys and playback licenses so ownership remains clear during content changes, entitlement updates and failures.

Media packaging

Prepare encoding and encrypted packaging for target devices, keeping audio, video, captions and manifests consistent.

Key management

Define who stores, accesses and rotates keys. Do not expose sensitive material in public client code.

License issuance

Check viewing rights before issuing a license, with clear expiry, renewal and failure handling.

Device enforcement

Verify actual player and hardware support and document unsupported environments and their alternative experience.

02

Build compatibility evidence through testing

The same browser can behave differently across devices and operating systems. Create a representative audience matrix and use real protected content for verification.

  • Check desktop, mobile, external displays and casting where the audience needs them.
  • Validate online playback, renewal and genuinely required offline scenarios separately.
  • Define behavior on unsupported devices instead of indefinite loading or an unsafe fallback.
03

Evaluate ongoing cost and recovery together

License request volume and media traffic are different cost drivers. Authorization may fail after media files load successfully, so it needs its own monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

No. Usage rights and contractual conditions require separate confirmation. Technical controls implement only part of the required playback policy.

No. Validate devices, formats, encryption and licensing together, and retain an explicit support matrix.
