Video cost planning

Video costs: processing, storage and delivery

Break down video budgets into processing, renditions, storage and viewing traffic, with separate checks for players, captions and licensing.

Overview

The same hour of content can have different costs depending on viewers, delivered bitrate and retained renditions. Agree on these inputs before comparing video-delivery options with WAFGO.

This guide explains budgeting rather than published video rates. It does not promise free transcoding, players, captions or DRM; confirm availability and charges for each.

01

Break costs down across the media lifecycle

An upload can produce multiple renditions, changing both stored volume and delivered traffic. Original file size alone is not enough to estimate ongoing viewing costs.

Media processing

Confirm whether processing is measured by input duration, output duration, resolution or job, including reprocessing.

Source and rendition storage

Distinguish retained originals, renditions, posters and captions so multiple bitrate versions are not overlooked.

Media delivery

Estimate transfer using viewing duration, bitrate distribution and audience location, treating live and on-demand use separately.

02

Use viewing behavior to refine the estimate

Total viewing time and average delivered bitrate provide an initial scale estimate, which should be refined with pilot measurements. Encoded rates, viewer choices and adaptive switching affect the result.

  • Transfer estimate: viewing seconds × average delivered bitrate ÷ 8, converted to the agreed data unit.
  • Measure audio, captions, retries, preloading and protocol overhead rather than treating the formula as exact.
  • For events, also assess concurrency, bursts and origin load rather than only monthly watch time.
03

Check playback and add-on scope

Players, caption generation, content licensing and reporting may come from different systems. The quote should identify the provider, billing unit and data-export arrangements.

Implementation & checks

  1. 01

    Inventory the library

Record durations, resolutions and retained renditions.

  2. 02

    Estimate viewing behavior

Describe viewing duration, regions and event peaks.

  3. 03

    Calibrate with a pilot

Compare playback quality, transfer and billing measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Views, bitrates, rendition count and processing choices all affect usage.

No. Uploads and repeated viewing are different workloads and should be estimated separately.
