Storage cost planning

Storage costs: capacity, replicas and lifecycle

Assess storage capacity over time, regional replicas, operations and transfer when planning migration, backups and CDN origin access.

Overview

File volume is only part of a storage budget. When discussing content storage and delivery with WAFGO, include replicas, retention, access frequency and charges from the existing storage provider.

This is a storage-selection and budgeting guide, not a claim of an available object-storage product, specific regional replicas or free origin transfer. Confirm available arrangements and charges separately.

01

Measure capacity over time and across copies

The month-end file size may not equal billable monthly storage. Confirm the averaging or accumulation method and whether replicas, old versions and backups are measured separately.

Active content

Record growth and access frequency by file type, separating popular content, retained archives and temporary files.

Regional replicas

Additional copies can change storage and replication charges; geographical redundancy should not be assumed free.

Versions and backups

Include rollback versions, deleted-object retention and backup capacity together with the recovery process.

02

Separate storage, operations and transfer

Capacity, read/write operations, cross-region replication and public transfer may be charged separately. With a CDN, distinguish origin-side costs from delivery-side costs.

Separate storage, operations and transfer
Cost componentWhat to check
Capacity over timeUnits, sampling, and treatment of versions and replicas
Requests and management operationsSeparate charges for reads, writes, listing, deletion or restoration
Data transferOrigin fetches, cross-region sync and public download boundaries
Migration and exitInitial import, bulk export and service-exit charges
03

Reduce unnecessary copies through lifecycle planning

Where retention requirements permit, reviewing stale versions, temporary artifacts and duplicate media can matter more than a single capacity rate. Validate recovery needs before removing anything.

  • Assign ownership, retention periods and deletion approval to each content class.
  • Evaluate archive recovery time and retrieval charges rather than storage price alone.
  • Before migration, check object counts, checksums, permissions and the exit process.

Implementation & checks

  1. 01

    Inventory content

Count capacity, growth, versions and replicas.

  2. 02

    Map cost dimensions

List storage, operation, replication and transfer charges.

  3. 03

    Validate migration

Use a small sample to verify costs and recovery.

Frequently asked questions

No. Check the storage provider's terms and the delivery agreement separately.

Not automatically. Changes and deletions may propagate, so backup and recovery policies need separate design.
